PREVENT the problem behavior before it starts! Learn and discuss the “ins and outs” of creating a proactive and prosocial classroom environment that will yield more time for academic instruction and less time dealing with problem behaviors. This framework, known as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), is the behavioral component of the Response to Intervention model (RtI). The majority of the course will focus on learning and implementing practical strategies for developing a classroom-based system that promotes social, emotional and behavioral growth and, in turn, increases academic success. There will also be information presented so that teachers can develop simple supports for the individual student who does not respond to the classroom system (ie. students who exhibit challenging behaviors or who have special learning needs).
