Are you looking for ways to further develop the social, emotional and behavioral development of your young students? Would you like to incorporate more character-based lessons into your curriculum? Are you interested in learning fun and engaging ways to address social skills that go beyond “reading the story?” If you answered “yes” then this course is for you! We will begin by previewing the Social Emotional Learning Standards developed by the Illinois State Board of Education. We will continue by gaining exposure to children’s literature that focuses on character, values, social skills and positive behaviors. A few authors that will be showcased include Julia Cook, Michelle Garcia Winner, Todd Parr and Kathryn Otoshi. Participants will be responsible for creating and sharing extension activities that support the social development of young children. You will leave this course with a book list and engaging lessons/activities that will help you address a variety of skills that promote the development of young children. Some of the skills will include but are not limited to listening and following directions, acceptance, problem solving and resolving conflicts. This course is geared toward primary grades (K-4).
