Most students name math as their most difficult subject. U.S. students’ math performance is not presented positively in the news. Teachers struggle with standards that often deliver content to students who are not developmentally ready for it yet. Parents find helping their children with math to be very challenging as strategies for teaching math have changed so dramatically in just one generation. In this course, comparisons between U.S. math performance and that of other high-performing countries will be explored. We will take a closer look at the content and methods used successfully from a global perspective. We will also look carefully at our current math curriculum and strategies, and ways that we can improve math understanding among our students. Participants will develop methods specific to their own students that will help to create deeper number sense and a strong foundation for high school and beyond. Resources to build confidence and performance for all students will be presented. This course is suitable for grades 2-8 math teachers.
